Recenter Background
Recenter is a supportive living center that provides 3 meals a day, community, 6 AA sessions a day, as well as medication assisted treatment (MAT) med storage for controlled distribution. Recenter houses 175 people in their facility and see an additional 100 per day for 12 Step (AA) meetings.
Everyone who works at Recenter is an addict, including Misha and David who are both managers, and there is a zero tolerance policy for using. They don't believe in a single ideology, but do believe that once you're an addict, you're always an addict, and "going cold turkey" is the preferred method of treatment at the facility.
Both thought a device to track ODs would be unecessary as everyone in the facility is ostensibly not using, and would think it would be useful to hand out devices on exit, but the thought of handing out 300 dollar devices to people upon exit seemed strange to both of them.
The facility doesn't track members, so there is no data related to overdoses. Clients are referred out to Houston Recovery Center and their biggest pain point is that people can score dope within a few blocks.
The general attitude is one of tough love with comments like "You don't shoot the wounded" being paired with a community atmosphere where sharing stories allows members to understand that "someone is [always] a bigger piece of shit than you".
When there is an overdose in the area, Fire is the first responder, and if fire doesn't show up, it typically takes cops hours to arrive on scene.
